It gets expensive. You can do a test before but the animal has to be over 6 months and I think it runs about $500.
The quarantine place is not awful but a lot of animals do not adjust that well to it. If you can wait then wait. When we 1st got Grommit we could not go away for more than an hour or two. We can leave him longer now but it really isn't fair to him. I had long beach days, shopping trips, field trips in HI. I love this little guy but I am really glad we waited until SD.

We just went through this but Iris only had to be in quarintine for 2 days because we had all of our paperwork squared away. It can get really expensive though. The best thing to do would be to contact the vet on base, the dept. of agriculture, and the vet in hawaii (on base)
Personally if I didn't have a pet right now, I would just wait until you got to Hi to get one. Thats just me though. It can be a big headache

Because you have 6 months before your move to Hawaii (if I am reading this right) you have time to complete the "5 day or less" quarantine program. You can read about it here:
http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/info . Be sure you read carefully so that you can choose an animal of the proper age to allow for you to complete the entire process prior to the move. Another option, which is preferable to some because of housing issues, is to have the pet remain stateside with a friend or family member (basically foster care) during the initial time of the move while you are travelling and securing housing that would allow the pet to join you (as it may be hard to find temp housing that would allow you to have the pet with you if you do not find pet-friendly housing on arrival) - this also allows time to do the 5 day program and avoid having the animal actually in the quarantine facility. My sister's family did the latter with their dog and it worked wonderfully. Once they arrived and had housing (and the time had passed for the 5-day program rules) my mom put the dog on a plane (cost less than $300 - not sure the actual amount though) and they were able to pick her up directly at the airport facility and take her home with them that day. SO much easier and gentler on everyone involved. |
