Sasebo, Japan???
Hello, I'm a newbie to this site. My DH accepted orders to Sasebo, Japan!
Does anyone have any info about the area? I lived in La Maddalena, Italy for 3 years so I think that I know what to expect but then again the was Europe, soooooo any info would be awesome!

Hello
Hey, We have orders to Sasebo. It will be a few more months before we go but We will be there.
DH was in Italy before he was DH. But I did visit and I have spent some time in Europe. DH has said its like Italy but in the future. He seems to really like it (they are there already). I am excited but very nervous. It will be an adventure, but everyone I have talked to has loved Japan |

What do you want to know about Sasebo? What command will your DH be in? I know a lot about the base and anything I'm not sure of, I can get answered for you.

We lived there a while back. The ships are in the port area, called Main Base. The housing is at Hario, a 20-30 min drive away, but it has the school and support services, so it's not a big deal to be away from where most everyone works. You can also live off base, although the houses/apts are quite small. There's interesting things to see and do there. It would be good to learn some of the language, even just to be able to ride the trains. It is definitely a more rural base compared to Yokosuka, etc. which are around Tokyo.

We were stationed in Iwakuni. It is the closest base to Sasebo that I know of. It isn't all that close though! There is a Costco relatively close to the base in Sasebo and their exchange seemed better than ours but maybe it had to do with them having different things!

Also, main base has the big NEX and small commy and Hario has the small NEX and big commy. Main base is TINY and you can walk it in about 20 mins. The people there are GREAT and like JK said, it would def. be good to learn some of the language. If you need help in that area I can send you a few links and stuff. When you show an interest in learning the people do all they can to help you. They have a great fitness area and Nimitz park with football and baseball fields. They share the park with the people there and regularly hold events at the park. |
