Gitmo?

DH is looking at taking a year long tour at Gitmo. Does anyone have their SO stationed there? Are you able to talk to your SO regularly? Do they get any special pays besides seperation pay?

My friend is stationed there (I'm actually watching her house for her while she's there)

She says it's great. There's all the ammenities of a base. She has an apartment to live in (almost like living in a college dorm) Beach access, movie theater, etc. She has internet access in her room but still has to use a phone card to call people. (again, this may just depend on your job and your phone access)

I think the only special pay she is getting is separation pay. But it may really depend on your job.

My DB actually JUST arrived there this week for a year long deployment. I haven't heard from him yet.. but I can keep you posted!

You should have regular communication... There may be special pay but I think it depends on what your SO's job is.

As for communication: Phone calls are super expensive between US and Cuba. Its political.

My husband is leaving there next week. He calls all the time. He uses phone cards. Are they still giving out that incentive pay to go there? He got that, family separation, hardship duty pay, and hostile fire/imminent danger pay for going behind the wire.

I don't know if they are giving incentive pay, he told me they needed 2 people to go from our base that are on shore duty and 1 person already volunteered so he figured it would be better to volunteer rather than be volun-told. He told me he would basically be a prision guard.

If they're still doing AIP, that's $800. HDP/IDP: $125. Plus $100 just for being on the island. Are you sure it's only a year? They told my husband that and in reality it was for 18 months.

He said he has 3 months training in Texas, home for a few weeks and then to Gitmo for 9 months and then he'll go back to shore duty for 2 more years

I'm looking for someone who may be in a similar situation - my boyfriend just found out that he's going IA to Gitmo. Has anyone dealt with this? Especially if you're not married? I could really use some help understanding what's about to happen.
