Shipping Rabbits to Hawaii
DF is stationed in Hawaii, as of now the tentative plan is to get me over there approximately a year from now. So I have some time to get stuff done ahead of time and we were talking about pets last night.
Just curious if anyone from MCBH knows about some of the pet policies and if they'd apply to bunnies; 1. Are rabbits allowed on base? (One of DF's friends said they were not, because they are "rodents", but god knows if that's reliable.) 2. Would the rabies regulations still apply to them? (Like the quaruntine?) I've had the hardest time finding info because the most I can find on rabbits is for people who buy them out in Hawaii, not people who ship them from mainland. We have two rabbits that are 3 and 5 years old, they're spayed and neutered. They're super-important to us so we've been trying to find out what the deal is with having bunnies in Hawaii. Thanks to anyone who has any info! |

I don't know anything about shipping rabbits, however, I have 2 of my own and I understand how important they are, my rabbits are my children and I'd never move anywhere without them. I suggest taking a look at this message board. I belong to it, and they have some great information, and you might be able to get some help there!

Also, you can try contacting someone at the national House Rabbit Society or perhaps find a local chapter on their website, they may be able to help you as well:

Rabbits:
Require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), also known as a health certificate. The CVI must be issued and signed by a State, Federal, or accredited veterinarian within seven days prior to arrival in Hawaii. The CVI must list and give a description of the rabbit(s) in the shipment, must state that the rabbit(s) were not showing signs of infectious, contagious and/or communicable diseases and were found free of external parasites. Rabbits are required to enter the State only through the Honolulu International Airport where they are required to be submitted by an agent of the airline carrier to the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility for inspection. Hours of inspection are 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Once inspection is complete and all entry requirements have been met, the rabbits may be released to the importer. http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/ldc/other/?searchterm=rabbit |

, poor bunnies, I could imagine how stressed out they will be from the flight, to have to wait overnight in a holding facility would be so bad for them

If you don't pick your animal up at the airport same-day, they get taken to the quarantine station. I don't know anything about importing rabbits though, good luck!

I know there are certain rules about bunnies. They are not native to the island and therefore have the potential to get loose and because an invasive species, since they breed like crazy.
http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscur..._0142-0095.htm Rabbits Rabbits may not be kept on the ground, but rather in hutches that are built up off the ground. This helps prevent rabbits from getting loose and posing a threat to our environment. The Department of Agriculture enforces this law.

Thanks for the help; the Hawaii gov sites were something I didn't (but should have) thought of. I'd been going through MCBH stuff to no avail. The most I could find from MCBH was their policies on aggressive dog species. Have to say, the bunnies are far from that end of the spectrum
