Calling from Germany to the U.S.
Can someone help me find a cell phone that can call from Germany to the U.S. and vice versa unlimited or at no cost? Any network perhaps? My DB is going to Germany, and he's trying to look for a phone he can use to call me from there.

I'm not familiar with all cell plans over here, but from what I know, you can get a prepaid cell and buy a Bananas Card for low cost calls to the US. Cellular plans (and prepaid for that matter) are expensive in Germany no matter how you go. Just the way it is. ![]() He could get Vonage and call you from his barracks room for just $25 a month. That way he could get a number local to you, so you could call him from your cell and he could call to your cell. For you to call him, you'd have to get a calling plan in the US that allows calls to Germany or buy a phone card as well.

I can't tell you about cellphones, but this is what I do know. We have a landline phone through our ISP. It's an extra 4 Euro a month for unlimited calling to landlines in the states. Well, North America. I don't think Hawaii counts. He might want to ask around and see who the ISPs are. I've found the civilian Americans and/or retired military who work on post are especially helpful with stuff like that.
Also, Skype is good, and free. Lots of people use that here.

Can you guys use Skype? I don't think there's a cell phone that will allow you to call back and forth for [virtually] free. I was told by my provider (AT&T) that when we moved to Germany, we'd have to switch to a network overseas. There is a different SIM card that's used. He said Virgin Mobile was pretty popular over there so maybe check that out? Otherwise try Vonage. Good luck!

Use Skype. Make a username and password, ask from your boyfriend to do the same and you can even see each other while you talk. All you need is a functional PC, a set of headsets with microphone and a webcam. He needs the same.
I have been using Skype for years to keep in touch with my family. And the great thing about it it's that it is free!

You do not want to use a cell phone to call the States - uber expensive. If he is stationed in the barracks I would suggest Skype or if he's able to get DSL . Our home phone/internet with TKS allows us unlimited calling to any phone in the States.
I am with my husband but he did come over here without me at first. Its hard but try to keep communication going - whether that's phone calls, emails or letters. Always end your conversations with "love yous" and not anger. The moments you have to "be" with each other are too precious to clutter with petty arguments or disagreements.

I agree with you. I get so impatient when he can't talk to me or write to me right away. I know it's not good, and I'm trying to change that. Sometimes, when he's so busy, he tends to forget calling or texting me, which I really don't like about him, but I still try to understand. I just don't know how long I can be so patient. I know his contract is only for 3 years, and he won't reinlist again, but 3 years is a long time for me. I just hope we can be able to work this.. You do get used to the distance in time right? |
