    Wacky Washington Trivia

    Advertisements
I just got this book randomly for the bathroom, and its really cool!

I am going to give you random facts about WA.

-Northgate mall was the first mall in the world, or the first shopping center in the world to be referred to as a "mall", it was built in 1950.

-Quincy Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Bing Crosby, and Anne and Nancy Wilson (of Heart) were all born and raised here (except Quincy who moved here at 10) as well as some guy named Kurt Cobain. (I'm sure most of you know this, but some don't).

-Seattle has the third largest theater community in the United States, lagging behind only New York and Chicago.

-Seattle is considered the most literate city in the country, there are three times more per capita bookstore sales than the national average.

-Seattle sells more sunglasses and less umbrellas per capita than anywhere else.

-The term 'skid row' originated in Seattle from the term 'skid road'. When the population boomed cause of the gold rush, logs were rolled down 'skid road' (now Yesler Way) to the busy part of town which is now Pioneer Square. A newspaper called it 'skid row' and the term was coined.

-Whidbey Island is the second largest island in the lower 48 states, with an area of 235 miles.

-The name Tacoma came from a Northern Pacific Railway official, Philip Ritz, who first saw it in Theodore Winthrops book "The Canoe and the Saddle".

-Mt Rainier is still an active volcano and is fully expected to erupt sometime in the future. The last eruptions were said to have occured between 1820 and 1894 when 14 different eruptions were recorded.

-Washington was in the forefront of womens suffrage, granting women the right to vote in the 1910 election.

-Fathers day was originated in 1910 in Spokane by Sonora Smart Dodd.

-Bertha Knight Landes was elected mayor of Seattle in 1926, the first time a woman was elected such a prestigious post in any major American city.

-In 1880, Clara McCarty was elected superintendant of Pierce County Schools (where I live), she was the first woman in the country to win an elective office.

I'll stop there for now, but I will add more as I see more.... and feel free to add any facts you have too!!!!

Whidbey Island is also the Longest Island in the lower 48... used to be second for longest but Long Island was determined to be a peninsula and lost the title.

    I heart WA

The original Starbucks is in Pikes Place Market, and opened in 1971. Its still there and in operation.

(I used to work for Starbucks before they were even nationwide, much less worldwide)
