westport has a variety of clubs if you are into that sort of thing. I haven't been down there myself, but alot of ppl really get into the scene. zona rosa is also a nice shopping area (it is off i-29 and barry road in missouri). my husband enjoys lakeside speedway (dirt track racing) on friday nights (he thinks it is $10 to get in) and there are a couple drive-in theatres in town too. That is a pretty fun night out - something different anyway. In east KC there is a family fun center called Cool Crest that has some really nice mini golf courses (in independence, mo). Union Station is a neat place to visit as well as the farmer's market (river key area). The steam boat arabia museum is down there too. Crown center is pretty nice if you are looking for "upscale" shopping. They have an ice skating rink down there (not sure if it is open in the summer or not) as well as some specialty restaurants. The plaza is another nice shopping area - best known around the Christmas season for the impressive lighting display and horse drawn carriage rides. There is also the woodlands race track (dog/horse races) just north of the legends on i-435. In a week or two, platte county fair starts in tracy, mo (about 8mi from the fort). In the fall the KC Renaissance fest starts which i heard is pretty fun and then the corn mazes open. There is a pretty neat one in independence. That is sept/oct... that is about all i can pull off the top of my head. just be glad you guys have KC close - we moved from there to ft. riley (aka "hell in the hills") and there isn't jack crap out here. we have to drive an hour to topeka for the closest old navy or kohls. ![]() feel free to PM me if you want any directions or whatever - i know my way around KC pretty good. ~Amy

Lived there...
We were there two years ago....I understand. The thrift store on base always needs help. It's kind of scary down there at first, but it's a good cause. The International loan closet also needs help, you'll meet all the international families that way, which is fun. Just walk in and tell them you want to volunteer! Also ask at MWR about the marble factory (as in small round marbles), it was a fun morning out. The nearest normal indoor mall is the one with Nordstrom, an hour away, but well worth the drive if you crave civilization.

LMAO! IMO it is... actually I have been told it is like a black hole out here; once you get here it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to escape this post. LOL. I had a neighbor who just retired who had been here for 12 years! Oh well, we have 6 years left til retirement so I guess that isn't too bad huh?
