Offut Neb?
We had to have order mods since DS is EFM and the base in TX couldn't provide certain services his PCM requested. Could any one give me a leg up on Offut? TIA

I've been here since September and we are one of the lucky ones to have gotten into the new housing. |

How are the housing prices out that away? I'm guessing the weather patterns are like Kansas/Oklahoma? I think the farthest North I have been is Edmond Oklahoma, and DH has been as far North as Enid Oklahoma.

We aren't looking to buy a house right now, but there are some nice houses not too far from base in the 135k range - the ones I glanced at were at least 3 bed/2bath though a few had more.
Honestly, it seems like a better route currently to get base housing unless you know you will be here for awhile. We have been crunching the numbers and we would end up paying more than our BAH to rent/buy because we'd be paying a lot more in utilities. I don't know if that is just related to the economy or if that is normal around here. I don't know Kansas or OK at all really... the weather here is cold and windy for the winter and it seems like just when you think it's gonna start to warm up this year, it gets cold again. There are tornadoes (part of tornado alley), and it rains a significant amount. We didn't have what I would call a LOT of snowfall this year, but it sticks around for awhile. The wind is the worst part for me... seems like it is ALWAYS windy here. I've not had very many good experiences at the medical clinic. It is off base, but very close to base. There seems to be a lot of confusion in the system and my PCM has been changed more times than I can count and now I don't even have one because they aren't sure who it should be. My advice on that is stay on top of them from the very beginning. The patient advocate who is in office now is great, but they have a hard time keeping someone in that position. The pharmacies (satellite or clinic) never have too long of a wait in my experience. For referrals - I skip referral management and just signed up with triwest online. When my referral hits the system (usually 24-48 hours) I get an email and can deal with it that way. It works a lot better for me doing it this way because every time I went into referral management they didn't know what they were doing and gave me incorrect information. The area seems great if you have kids - there is plenty family activities to do around here. It's a little boring for my husband and I (mid-20's without kids) but many people love it here. There is adequate shopping without driving too far, lots of different places to eat. The only recommendation I can give you about eating out really is that the Texas Roadhouse on 370 (closest to base) is horrible when you compare it to the Texas Roadhouse out at 156th and Dodge. It's a night and day difference and it's worth the drive to go to the one on 156th. The base has a large BX (compared to ones I've seen in Texas and Washington) but I've not gone to the commissary. The base itself is well equipped with things like a vet, bowling alley, activity center, child development center, woodshop, auto shop, car wash, airman's attic, thrift store, family support, legal etc. One thing to keep in mind is that public transportation here is really poor. Ive heard it's better in actual downtown Omaha but it doesn't stretch to the outlying areas like Bellevue. Having a bike or 2 cars seems like a must - at least to me. Occasionally, DH has been able to find people to carpool with but the longest that worked out was 1.5 months when he and a neighbor were in the same training. Not much is within walking distance - at least not in the winter. If you have any specific questions I'll try to help ya out! I'm originally from Arizona so this entire environment is new to me. |
