May Day - International Workers' Day

    Advertisements
"When we remember that people were shot so we could have the 8-hour day; if we acknowledge that homes with families in them were burned to the ground so we could have Saturday as part of the weekend; when we recall 8-year old victims of industrial accidents who marched in the streets protesting working conditions and child labor only to be beat down by the police and company thugs, we understand that our current condition cannot be taken for granted - people fought for the rights and dignities we enjoy today, and there is still a lot more to fight for. The sacrifices of so many people can not be forgotten or we'll end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate May Day."

Some police officers (9 as reported by MSM but can't verify) sustained minor injuries by thrown rocks (NOT Molotov cocktails as some are reporting). Nine arrests were made, and these individuals are being charged with "malicious mischief."

Police in riot gear began marching on the bloc when they stopped to erect a barricade (as was done successfully last fall). To that point, the protest was nonviolent and participants were chanting anti-racist/anti-nationalist/anti-prison slogans. As police approached fully armed, some people within the bloc threw rocks. (Source- reportback from individual who was present.)

Note that May Day is a workers' holiday, but anarchists traditionally do join in as socialist workers and trade unionists often have similar protest sentiments. May Day is not an anti-state "holiday," though there are a number of black bloc activists who don't pass up a single change to smash the state. Literally, in this case, with the windows of two banks and a Starbucks being broken. That said - many unions and leftist groups have expressed concern over alienating potential allies with black bloc tactics, and do not explicitly support "violence" against the state and corporations.
