Weird News
So my hometown newspaper has a section calles "strange news" and here are a few of the stories from today's issue. They're not as funny as they usually are, but they are pretty weird...
Ohio woman says her windshield smashed when an eagle dropped fish onto her car Marblehead, Ohio - A woman in Ohio is telling a fish story about one that got away _ from a bird, and damaged her car. Authorities in northwest Ohio say the fish _ a Lake Erie freshwater drum, known as a sheepshead, smashed a car windshield Tuesday when an eagle dropped its catch from a height of about 40 feet. Leighann Niles says the impact felt like a brick hitting her Toyota's windshield. The woman from the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid was vacationing along the lake in Marblehead. Niles says she had thought herself lucky to escape damage in another animal encounter shortly before the fishy one. She says a truck hit a small bird, which struck her back passenger door and startled her 5-year-old daughter. _________________________ Ill. man who made 'loud, boisterous' yawn in courtroom faces 6 months in jail for contempt Joliet, Illinois - Drowsy spectators in one suburban Chicago courtroom might want to stifle their yawns from now on. Clifton Williams, 33, of Richton Park, is facing six months in jail for making what court documents call a yawn-like sound in Will County Judge Daniel Rozak's court last month. The yawn happened as Williams' cousin, Jason Mayfield, was being sentenced for a drug charge on July 23. Rozak found Williams in contempt of court and sentenced him to six months in jail. However, Rozak could free Williams after a status hearing Thursday, if Williams apologizes and the judge accepts. By then, Williams will have served 21 days. Witnesses disagree about whether Williams' yawn was out of line. Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County state's attorney's office, said the prosecutor in the courtroom at the time told him that what came out of Williams' mouth could hardly be called a "yawn." "This was a very loud, boisterous, deliberate attempt on the part of this individual to disrupt the proceedings and show disrespect to the court," Pelkie said. "It was not a guy who involuntarily yawned. This guy was making a statement _ a very loud statement _ in court." Mayfield disagreed, saying it was "not an outrageous yawn." Williams has written his family to say that he can't believe he's in jail "for nothing." A message left for Rozak Tuesday was not immediately returned. Six months is the maximum sentence judges can give for criminal contempt without a jury trial. _________________________ Chronic Chicago shoplifter pleads guilty in 61st arrest, sentenced to 2 days in jail Chicago - An 86-year-old Chicagoan who's been arrested more than 60 times pleaded guilty to the latest charge against her after being accused of stealing wrinkle cream and other items from a grocery store. Ella Orko was arrested Aug. 2 after authorities say she stuffed $252 worth of items into her pants, including cosmetics, salmon, batteries and instant coffee. Orko had been charged with felony shoplifting, but that was reduced to a misdemeanor in exchange for her guilty plea Monday. Judge Marvin Luckman sentenced her to two days in jail, which is what she's already served. _________________________ The last one actually kinda bothers me. I mean, I know she's 86 and all, but 61 times?! I think she needs a little more than 2 days already served in jail.
