Wimunc Charged with 1st Degree Murder

Camp Lejeune Marine Cpl. John Wimunc has been charged with arson and is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center with a $500,000 bond, police said. Wimunc was taken into custody by agents of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service last Sunday, said Maj. Cliff Gilmore, spokesman for the 2nd Marine Division, to which Cpl. Wimunc is assigned. It was not immediately clear when custody of Wimunc was transferred to Fayetteville authorities. Wimunc's wife, Fort Bragg soldier 2nd Lt. Holley Lynn Wimunc has been missing since Thursday since her Fayetteville apartment was set fire. Authorities believe a charred body found in a shallow grave near Camp Lejeune Sunday afternoon is Holley Wimunc.

Since last Thursday morning’s shocking news about Holley’s burned apartment and her missing-person status, our family throughout the country has nonetheless been holding on to a thin thread of hope that she would be found alive. Today, that thread of hope broke as her body was discovered. Holley was a proud St. Ambrose University graduate, excited about both her chosen field of nursing and her career in the U.S. Army. She was an even more proud mother of her wonderful son and daughter whose activities and personalities never failed to give her joy. The arrests came after the discovery of a charred body in woods near Camp Lejeune on Sunday. While authorities have not officially confirmed that the body is that of Army 2nd Lt. Holley Lynn James Wimunc, but her father released a statement this morning saying that it is his daughter. She has been missing since Thursday, when she didn’t show up for work and the remains of a fire were found in her apartment in Fayetteville. Wimunc was a nurse at Womack Army Medical Center. No charges have been filed in connection with Holley Wimunc’s death. The two Marines have been charged with setting a fire at her building in Morganton Place Apartments. photo Alden John Wimunc’s bail is set $500,000 and Alden’s is $250,000. John Wimunc’s parents, Florian and Lana Wimunc, said Sunday that he allowed police to search his barracks room over the weekend.
