    He found his thumb

    Advertisements

A couple of days ago, Cameron realized that he had a thumb...and that he could suck it. I wish he was old enough to understand no. It would make this so much easier. I REALLY hope this is just a "oh hey! This is new and cool!" phase and that he doesn't get used to it.

I wouldn't worry until he starts getting teeth. I found a website you may find helpful: Thumb sucking: Help your child break the habit - MayoClinic.com According to that, most children stop between 2-4

Why is it such a disaster if he sucks his thumb?

Naomi found hers about that age and it was a godsend for self soothing. At a year she only sucks her thumb to let me know she's tired and to go to bed.

She has teeth but even her dentist said it is NBD

Matty found his thumb while in the womb, I swear. It's hard and worrisome. Honestly, I give him 'sock hands' a lot.

It is great for self soothing, but speaking from experience, I sucked my thumb until I was 16 years old. It's a hard habit to break.

I was a thumb sucker when I was younger. It took my dentist yelling at me when I was younger to stop. Most kids stop after time. Don't worry!

Not for all children. And a paci can be just as hard.

I wouldn't worry about him sucking his thumb. Both of mine did and had no ill effects from it. In fact my ds was sucking his thumb during the ultrasound. They do stop when they don't need the comfort any longer. But the more you try try make them stop the more they will want to do it.

They are always so cute when they finally discover things.

You're right- it's not for all children, but how do you know your child won't make it a habit? A paci is a much easier habit to break.. you can just take it and throw it away. Your thumb is attached to you at all times.

Idk I just don't see it as a crisis I guess. If a big deal is not made of it children normally stop at an appropriate age. My siblings all sucked their thumbs longest one wen was 5.

I've seen my cousins go through horrible issues losing and weaning from binkies. Screaming horrible fit issues.
