On infants coughing - when to worry?

    Advertisements
Kyllee has coughed 4 times (twice really, two coughs each time) in the last 5 hours, but has no other odd symptoms. No fever, regular BM and wet diapers, not additionally fussy (she was last night, she literally slept attached to my boob all night) , and regular spitup, nothing extreme.

Now, me being the super paranoid control freak new mom that I am discovering that I am - I want to rush to the doctor right now. The logical thinking part of my brain said to google and ask around first. So I googled and basically without any other symptoms and as long as it's not constant and getting worse there isn't anything to worry about.

Suggestions? Basically leave it alone and just watch her closely? DF has some sort of runny nose sniffly sneezy cough thing going on which makes me even more worried though, but he's pretty sure it's just allergies. (I am worried about whooping cough)

Never hurts to call your doctor. Kalista has coughed occasionally and it wasn't anything to worry about, but if I was worried at all I would have called her doctor.

DS did this for about two weeks after I gave birth to him. He would cough and sneeze CONSTANLY! I was sure he was allergic to our dog, started to panic and called the doc. We ended up having our 2 day appt that day anyway and he said that newborns, especially ones born after due date, will cough and sneeze because they are still trying to clear fluid out of their lungs.

He told us to not worry unless the cough became "dry or barky sounding" or if he started sneezing dark snot out of his nose. They cough subsided about 2 weeks later and to this day he still sneezes often. Doc said nothing to worry about, just like adults, some babies just sneeze a lot.

But yes, if you are curious or worried, please call the doc. That is what they are there for!

Err on the side of caution and trust your Mommy instincts. With RSV, whooping cough and others out there, better safe than sorry!
