Don't Let Babies Sleep With Bottles!!!

    Advertisements
I feel the need to post this after my nursing clinical in pediatric dental surgery and seeing several children under the age of 3 have multiple teeth pulled and many, many cavities. It broke my heart because it's so preventable...

Do not let your babies or children under the age of 5 go to sleep with a bottle. Babies and young children retain the suckling reflex and can hold liquid in their mouths for hours (adults can't do this, we've lost that reflex.)

Milk, Juice, and other liquids that stay in the child's mouth for hours causes bacteria to grow in the child's mouth breaking down tooth enamel causing cavities and tooth decay.

I totally think this should be stickied because it's REALLY REALLY important and most people don't know it!!!

Not only can this cause teeth and gum problems but it can also cause a child to choke or drown if they retain it and fall asleep. It's a huge NO NO!!!

    Thank you!!!

I never realized how serious this was until I went into surgery and the surgeon said she gets at LEAST 40 kids a month with this problem!!!! We live in a very small community so that's insane to me.

It's so painful for the babies and toddlers

I had a friend growing up who was allowed to sleep with juice bottles as a baby and she had to have all four of her top front teeth pulled. She didn't have the adult teeth come in until she was 11 or 12. When my husband and I were interviewing sitters, we asked them whether or not it was ok to let a baby sleep with a bottle since I'm so paranoid about it.

my cousin had to have all her baby teeth pulled when she was about 4 or 5 because they were all seriously decayed from my aunt and uncle leaving her every night with a bottle. Too much juice in general can also cause this

My dad's told me about this! He's a pediatrician so I guess he only sees bad cases, but he said if the tooth decay gets bad enough it can cause a systemic infection too, and actually be pretty dangerous.

Yep A baby should NEVER sleep with a bottle tooth decay and even choking are both serious things that do happen.

Also much worse when babies have teeth already. No teeth=gum disease/infection, teeth=same plus tooth decay, and all the other listed issues.
