I sucked my thumb up til I was in 5th ish grade. Seriously. My teeth aren't crazy and bad... but it is DEFINITELY harder to break than a pacifier.
I WAS going to cut Molly off by doing super nanny's pacifier fairy trick around when she was 2 or so because it is really just a sleep tool for her... but she weened herself. It was AWFUL. We went on a trip to ft polk and she doesn't travel or sleep very well and somewhere along the way she refused to take the soothie and wouldn't take anything else. Now if you give it to her, she just chews on it. It took awhile to find a new way to get her to sleep (she nurses to sleep sometimes now, something she never used to do ever and she puts HERSELf to sleep sometimes now.) but now she doesn't even seem to care. Other than sleeping, she really only used it in the car when she was tired or fussy or whatever and now I just give her a toy. |

But even if it doesn't mess up your teeth, it's a harder habit to break than the pacifier. At with the paci you can take it away. You can't really take a thumb away, kwim?

Alexis weaned herself at like 9 months. She only uses it now in her crib.. she knows it does not come out of the crib. I don't plan to attempt to take it away until she's probably 2. Even now, she doesn't NEED it to fall asleep, but it does help.
