    Help Breastfeeding problem

    Advertisements
OK so I dont really understand what is wrong. I tried to talk to the lactation consultant and I got the typical "i've been doing this for 40 years. Your baby is not panicing. You just arent feeding him when he WANTS to be fed."

Ok well thats great. If that was the case he would never eat. He has never once woken us up. I even, at the consultants advice, went 8 hours yesterday and he didnt wake up once. I understand he is a new baby but he is jaundice. He HAS to eat. Even when he is awake he doesnt cry to eat.

Now the real problem. When I wake him up he is fine. Doesnt cry just wakes up. The second I put him to the breast he panics. Litterally panics. He screams, tears at my breasts with his hands, turns his head, and wont calm down for anything. We are at wits end. I have to pump the milk and then feed him that to even try to get him interested in the breast. I have tried squirting some into his mouth. This doesnt work either. I have to get him eating more. I have had to use a bottle now a couple of times because he isnt getting enough food.

    Any thoughts?

I would skip the lactation specialist at that point and call your pedi. Maybe they need to run his billi levels again. The baby has to eat!

your lactation consultant sounds like a quack. Find a better one or talk to someone else. That doesn't sound normal. I've never heard of something like that.

I agree, call his pedi if hes not eating.

Carter was jaundiced, and during the day I woke him up every 2 hours to eat. If he fell asleep nursing Id try to wake him up.

Carter sometimes freaks out when I try to nurse him if hes got a burp in there, and I have to burp him for a few then he lets out a HUGE one and I can nurse him then. Sometimes hes just too worked up and I have to walk around and pat his bum while nursing him.

I really dont know though, he only freaks occasionally on the breast and its usually a burp or hes too fussed up.

Yeah, he drinks milk from the bottle great. No problems there at all. Its only when I try to get the latch on the breast.

This basically talks about having a slow let down or a low supply and causing the baby to fuss. When I PMS my supply drops to almost nothing and he gets frustrated and panicy because of that. Its always frustrating for both of us when that happens.

This ones the opposite, it talks about having an over supply.
