    Eye Gunk

    Advertisements
so baby bear is kinda crying tears but they dry up and form this gunk off to the side, not near the tear duct. this gunk is trying to seal his eye shut. it was the other eye yesterday and now today it is the other eye. I have been wiping his eye off with warm wash cloth and it clears it up. I asked the pedi about it yesterday and she said to take my finger and rub his tear duct cause it was getting clogged in a circle about 8 times. i don't think she understood what i ment was going on. or did she?

The same thing happened to my brother when he was a baby.
My mom would place a warm washcloth on his eyes and it would open his eyes.
I'm not sure what it was but it eventually cleared up.

my nephew had that same problem. we did the washcloth thing like you are doing and his pedi just said it might be because of the pollen in the air that his allergies were already beginning to act up.
    we kicked deployment #2's butt!

Ped is right, just use teh warm washcloths.

Unless the gunk is green/foul smelling it is proably the duct.

    white is normal

The duct can close at night and then as baby moves, rubs it can spead across the eye. The warm washcloths and massage will help open it.

i was told by my lactation consultant that breastmilk can be put in the eyes and nose to be used as solution. it has antibiotics in it that help infection or stuffiness or cloudiness...so if you are breastfeeding, that is always an option.

but i agree that a warm washcloth, wiping away the guck is a good remedy. we had to do both of these things whenever our son had an immature tear duct when he was little. it lasted for about 3 or so days.

Even though it's not right on the duct it's still a clogged duct. Do the warm wash cloth and massage it for a few minutes a few times a day. 2 of my kids had clogged ducts. If it doesn't clear up talk to the pedi so they can see if it's an infection or if the duct has an issue.
