i'm pretty sure you can use any, because you aren't even required to use one on most carriers

Most of the new ones are airplane approved but like already said, most of the time you dont use them on the plane, just have the baby in your lap

I always had DS on my lap when he was a baby but a friend of mine took her little boy to the states recently and had him in a car seat, i thought that looked so much easier but i remember my one was supposedly not suitable.

i would check whichever airline you plan on using, either their website or 1-800 number. they should be able to tell you any exclusions.

Also it depends on destination (such as other countries).

We take our Britax on no problem. We always buy DD a seat of her own which makes flying so much easier.
I've also flown with our Graco.

The car seat should say "aircraft approved' on the side.

if a carseat is approved for FAA use it will say that. typically seats like the buckets aren't approved for FAA use.
