    Question Using Used Breastpumps

    Advertisements
I have heard conflicting stories about this, so I am wondering how many of the ladies here would or would not use a used breast pump and why?

Some say there is absolutely no way to sterilize them and there can be bacteria left behind and it's just unsanitary. Other's say as long as they have been sterilized then it's just fine. I mean, doesn't the hospital loan pumps? Surely they don't throw them out and buy new ones to loan each time?

I am confused. I know how expensive a good pump is, and have a family member that is sending me her old one. But, of course I don't want to use it if it's unsanitary.

If you buy new tubes and breast shields, and the valves, you should be fine using one from a relative, especially if you know she doesn't have AIDs or Hepatitis.

I say if you sterilize or buy new parts then it's fine. I used a pump that a family friend gave me. It was a Medela Select.

I bought a used Medela pump for 1/3 of the price a new one would have cost me. I just bought new shields and bottles. The tubes never touch breast milk so I didn't buy new ones of those. There would be no reason not to buy a used pump if you bought new bottles and shields.

Regardless if she did...it wouldn't be transmitted. It wouldn't survive that long outside of the body.

You would be fine to use a used pump as long as you got new tubes and shields and attachement parts. I would certainly use one that was a friend or family members.
    Needs work.

I'd only use a used pump if I bought new tubes, shields and valves. I might use the tubes if I know the person well enough.
