    Advertisements
    Is it really necessary ?

My baby's doctor told me breastfed babies need extra vitamin D. She gave me a multi vitamin to give him. Ive never heard anything about having to give babies extra vitamins .

I have never heard that. You can get vitamin D from other sources though, like the sun (but not too much) and bananas. I definatly wouldn't give a 2 week old vitamins that weren't comming from you though.

That is a new requirement from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Apparently, because of the fears of the sun's harmful rays, people are not getting enough sun, therefore not enough Vitamin D. They are saying it applies to infants too. I had the same reaction when I read that. I couldn't imagine giving my infant vitamins.

My son is 3 months and gets a liquid vitamin supplement.. we don't get a ton of sun here at ALL so vitamin D is a concern in general...

A couple minutes in the sun will take care of the Vit D if you don't want to do the vitamins.

my doctor did the same thing. Also iron drops. I just shook my head yeah and never gave him anything. Breastmilk was all he needed AS LONG as I was eating healthy also.

When I had CaliAnne recently was the first time I heard this too. My youngest son is only 2 1/2 and I never had to give him a supplement. But with 3 boys, we are outside a lot so I'm not worried about a lack of vitamin D for the baby!
