No Longer a Military SO, But Still Lovin' On MSOS
|
Gratitude Campaign (Please Look)
While I am no longer in a military relationship, I still support our troops and wish them safety. My office is right down the street from an Army recruiting office and right next to a popular lunch spot. I CONSTANTLY see men in ACUs walk by. I'm always tempted to say thank you for their efforts and I have had experience knowing a little of what they go through, but I always chicken out and I'm silent. Well a friend just sent this to me in an email and I thought it was great.

I always feel the same way even with DF being in the military. And I've seen this before, but a long while back. I've done it since.. Everytime I remember at least.
Thanks for sharing

The question is on how many service members are actually well versed in said sign and or program. I used to hate people coming up and thanking me for my service, it was awkward because I did not do anything signifigant, I was a weekend warrior. Occasionally people will do it to J again, awkward via the fact that he chose his career, and deploying is part of the job and he gets paid well for it, plus it's the space invasion factor of such encounters.

![]() My dad was active duty for 26 years and my husband has been for the past 4 1/2 and they both feel awkward as hell when stuff like that happens. The space invasion factor is a HUGE pain to both of them. Not all service members feel like they should be thanked, most of the ones I know actually prefer not to be. |

the "thank you" issue is interesting... honestly, i think it can be awkward for both ppl... and i guess thats what the whole point of something the "gratitude campaign" seems to be. a way for ppl to thank service members without engaging in conversation or invading their space.
i don't really go up to service personnel and thank them... but if someone in uniform in public (like an airport, etc, ...once this happened in a macdonald's in boston - dominique was there with me ) approaches me and has a conversation or says "hi" - before i walk away i'll say "thanks for your service." no big deal. it just feel appropriate to say maybe? idk.

yup! looky what the website says...
The Story of How it all got started For the past several years as I've been traveling around the country, I've been approaching Soldiers in airports and thanking them for serving for us. On several occasions I have noticed that it felt a little awkward for both of us. There are several reasons, some of which I am even just now learning as I produce this film and talk to more Service Men & Women and Veterans. But they have always appreciated being thanked, and I have always felt better having expressed my gratitude. I started to think that it would be nice if civilians had a gesture or sign that they could use to say "thank you" quickly and easily without even having to approach. I did some research and found the sign that we are now using. Is this limited to the military? Not at all. If you look around you I'm sure that you'll find lots of people who are serving their communities, from local to global. If you appreciate their service, give them a sign. Say "thank you from the bottom of my heart." -Scott Truitt, FOUNDER, The Gratitude Campaign http://www.gratitudecampaign.org/story.php
