    relicensing and renewing car/tags

    Advertisements
My tags expire this month and I'd really like to just hold off on getting them renewed until next month when I go home to visit. Johns car is registered at my parents house and I'd like to do the same with my car. I twould just makes things 100xs easier. John seems to think if I take my car to WA and try to license it there they will make me pay taxes on it. We bought the car out right in Illinois and payed the taxes there. I don't understand why I'd have to pay taxes twice on the same thing. My car still has the Illinois plates since the tags weren't expired and now we live in CA. I don't exacty have a question Im just looking for input, advice or whatever.

For the record I know I should renew my tags before they expire. I know I can get stopped and ticketed for expired tags.

I believe that he is right. They do charge taxes when you change a tag over to another state.

I am on my way to switch our plates from Michigan to Oklahoma and I know that here in Oklahoma you have to pay the tax when you get the tags, but in Michigan, you roll it into your payment, which we already did. I will let you know more when I get home in a little while! They better not make up pay twice, or I will just renew them for Michigan again!!!

it all depends on the state law. i know when we switched from VA to south dakota plates on a truck we had. because it was still financed, we didnt have to pay the new taxes in SD. but as soon as it was paid off, we would have.

We just registered our car here in WA, but its in his name, so we didnt have to pay extra ( i think there is a military thing)...But he also paid taxes in RI too...I think for our plates and tags it was like 86 bucks.

Try these links. It might help. As someone else said, being military it may be a little different.
