I don't remember the exact time frame, I think they measure it in weeks (20+ something). I lived with my husband at his tech school (it was 9-10 months), but he was cross training, not coming out of basic so I'm not sure how it works for those scenarios. I do know that, at least in my DH's career field, it is verbally discouraged even if it is a long school.

It all depends on how the orders are written. There are timeframes, but little things can mess with them. Like if he has a 2 week training somewhere and that is in the middle, they could either make the whole thing 3 TDYs, or they could make it a longer PCS with a short TDY in the middle. So even if you get an exact number, you may not know for sure.

Does your DH have orders yet?

Also, you can always move to be where he is if you want. This issues are 1) whether the military will pay for your move 2) whether he can live off base with you and 3) where his BAH pay will be calculated for.

I did this in 2007. Hubby cross-trained and had a 6 month school. We pcs'd from overseas to Keesler(where he had training). We stayed at lodging first until we found an apartment off base. Then moved to the duty station after 6 months together. He is AF. Not sure if its still the same as now.

He cross-trained though not after basic so not sure about that one.
