An ombudsman is a family/command liason. They help out in times of crisis, and can lead you to and through the proper channels of contacting the Red Cross, Chaplain and other base resources during an emergency situation. The Ombudsman also relays infomation from the CO/XO to the spouses/families of sailors.

because of my past history... i dont count on the omb anymore. everyone that we have had was worthless. what really did it for me was when our child was diagnosed with cancer, i couldnt get a hold of Walter by email. She NEVER returned any of my phone calls and never relayed any of the info to the ship. I rely on my family, friends and myself now.

I have had some friends that have had awesome ones though. I just wasnt one of the lucky ones. but yea, they are the link between the command and the families.

I have never had good luck with them myself...they are supposed to keep things in confidence, but I have found too many that "chit chat" amongst the spouses. But if you get a good one they are supposed to be a huge help and a great communication link.

I've had rotten luck with ombudsmen until our last one. She and I are friends, and since I served as FSG president we got to work together on lots of projects.

Don't let a few bad apples ruin your whole concept of Ombudsmen. There are some who are GREAT!

A standard rule of thumb is to be very selective as to what you tell the ombudsman or anyone command affiliated. Only let them know information that is necessary.

I think it's very cliquey, therefore I won't try to rely on the ombusdman either...
