Sponsor
What all does a sponsor do for you? We've had some trouble because we were assigned a sponsor who was going TDY the same time as we arrive, then they assigned a new person, but then our old sponsor isn't leaving I guess so they gave him back to us? Whatever is going on, I am a little wary that everything will be taken care of. I know they get your mailbox and set up for you to get picked up from the airport. What else do they do so I can try to make sure and ask them about the specifics? Also should we be getting a sponsor packet?

I have no clue. I know that we had a sponsor but I have no idea who it was. The situation with us, though, is that my DH has been in Korea repeatedly and every sponsor assigned to him has been a newcomer so we really don't have a use for one LOL!

They need to get you a hotel on base ASAP for when you get there. If your sponsor hasn't done it, you can have Steven call and make that reservation. It needs to be done ASAP though, they fill up! Yes, absolutely pick you up from the airport. They are supposed to set up the mailbox,
but don't worry about that too much, Steven can do that when he gets there and it takes like 5 minutes. He will need a copy of Steven's orders to get the hotel booked. Like I said, tell hubs to call and book that. You don't want to be stuck staying off base and with no car to get around. Then, IF (and only if) they are a good sponsor, they will take you around and help you do everything and give you rides everywhere. Don't count on that though.

The sponsor we got on the way to Arizona sucked. They are suppose to give you information on the area and make the transition a little easier. They are also suppose to get your hotel booked on base for you. They should show you around base when you get there. Which I wish we had because we were totally lost. I wish I could help more but like I said ours sucked. You should have an e-mail/phone number to call with questions about the area.

Okay awesome, I forgot about the hotel part! I remember you told me you had that issue, Katie. I'll tell Steven to call tomorrow morning. I think they just told him yesterday that we were keeping the same sponsor as we were assigned originally.

The one he hasn't heard from this whole time? Definitely get Steven on the hotel asap. Hopefully the sponsor will make sure you aren't stranded at the airport. At this point I think that's all you really can expect of him.

Okay I'll tell him to call tomorrow. We did get an email from the first one and he said he needed to know when we arrived, so Steven sent him the dates and he said he was going to be TDY so he would get us someone else, so the new person contacted us a couple days later but then replied again saying there was a misunderstanding and the first guy is still actually our sponsor. So that's about all the progress we've been able to make with him. I'll make sure Steven gets on it though because we really don't want to stay off base. They did receive our orders and just needed to know when we actually arrive in the UK and then that's when all the miscommunications started.

In my experiences, they are basically there (if you get one and get one who cares) for support. They send you info on the base and the area around the base before you get there, they often pick you up at the airport if you fly in, show you around the base etc. But, I know that more often than not sponsors are not assigned or they don't really do anything nowadays.

All of our sponsors were really there just for information and support. When we moved to Hawaii twice we took care of the hotels, rental cars etc.......we might have called them for information, but we were able to do that by ourselves.
I think my husband used his sponsor more than anything else......I know we had a sponsor for our move here to Florida, but we didnt' need him for anything. Personally I would make sure you take care of the essentials like hotels etc and not rely on someone else to do that unless they said "I will take care of that for you".....kwim? I've heard of several people waiting for someone to pick them up at airports when it wasn't confirmed the sponsor had to do it.
