Question about the Army paying for a move
Okay. . . I hope this isn't too confusing. I am asking this for my friend.
He is stationed in S. Korea with the Army & has been out there since July 2nd of this year. He is unaccompanied & has a wife & kid back here in Cali. His wife wants to move to Kentucky near his mom. Now. . . He's saying that if you go to Korea, there is a window where they will move your spouse somewhere & pay for it. I have never heard of this happening. All I've heard of is that they'll pay for you & your spouse to PCS to a new base. And that if she didn't PCS with him right away, she has 30 days to PCS to the base he is at for them to pay for it. After that, they're SOL. But I don't know much about Korea. Does anybody know anything about this?

actually he is correct- since he is on unaccompanied orders he can do one designated PCS move for his dependnants.
they will pay to move them and will pay to get them there- this is called a 'designated move" and tell him he can find the regs in the JFTR chapter 5 ALSO this will allow him to change the BAH to the families liocation and will allow them to PCS from this location to the new duty station after his tour in Korea. she will need to have a POA to set up and initiate the move on her end.

Thanks for the info.
I will pass it on to him the next time I talk to him.& the need of a PoA is not for housing, but for them to pay for the move itself, correct?

My DH goes unaccompanied to Korea. I have the choice of staying where I am and the AF will pay for a PCS move to his next duty station after Korea. I can choose to move to the next designated duty station after Korea and the AF will pay for it. If I choose to move any where else, the AF will not pay for it. Let's say I decide to move from Texas to North Carolina while he is gone. That's on my dime. His next duty station after Korea is California. I BELIEVE that the military will cover the cost of moving from Texas to California, but it's out of our pockets to pay for me to move from North Carolina to Texas (or the cost / cash equivalent of doing so). Does that make sense?

It makes perfect sense, and that is how I understood it, too. But we're Navy & haven't had to deal with this yet. He's Army though.

from the JFTR: B.
PDS Changed to a Dependent-restricted Tour Station, or Sea Duty Changed to Unusually Arduous Sea Duty 1. General . When a member receives a PCS authorization/order to a PDS to which dependent travel is authorized and that PDS is later changed to a dependent-restricted tour station, or when there is a change in the designation of the duty aboard a ship, afloat staff, or afloat unit from sea duty to unusually arduous sea duty, authorization for dependent travel and transportation allowances to a designated place under par. U5222-D1c is as prescribed in par. U5240-B. In par. U5240-B, "appropriate POE" is the port used for sea travel, Like I said- it is in the JFTR and can be done- tell your freind to look in the JFTR under special cicumstances and all the instruction is there how to do it.
