    Camp Lejeune

He popped the question and I'm moving out!!!!

I'm just such a n00b when it comes to EVERYTHING! I had good luck with having a family business, so i have never even thought about apartment hunting or buying things or anything until a couple of months ago.

How long does it take to get all the paperwork settled when it comes to the COLA, We saved up enough not to need it for a few months, but i just want to stay on the safe side. I know it's going to take a while until we can get our marraige paperwork settled, i just can't wait to move up to North Carolina. Any tips for a complete N00b? ? ?

COLA is only for overseas so I think you mean BAH which is the money your df ( he will have to be your dh first of course ) will receive for housing. I've heard it can take awhile for all of your info to be updated in DEERS but I'm not sure.

Oops, I guess it's not just for overseas . Here's some info I found on it just so I don't confuse anybody!

While I'm at it, here's some info on BAH:

OH... but it's only for certain places. So I guess it's only for places that have higher cost of living.

Camp Lejeune is definitely not that place

Took about a month for the money to come in after we visited Camp Lejeune and got all that stuff taken care of. All in one day, hubby and I got my id, DoD decals, the finances taken care of, Tricare... I think that's it.

It's not COLA, it's BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing). As far as advice for a newbie moving out...

Buy cheap. Living on your own for the first time is not the easiest to start. Take up offers on folks that are getting rid of their stuff. You don't need a palace to start out with. Craigslist is really good for furniture and whatnot.

Develop a budget. I have a spreadsheet I made that might help you...pm me if you want it. Buy cheap foods too. Ramen noodles, mac & cheese, poptarts, pasta, spaghetti sauce... Foods that will fill you up that you can afford to eat!

When apartment hunting...pictures don't do justice. Go out and look at places physically. Spend a week in the area checking out apartments, etc. Everything looks different on the internet pictures.

Cost of move...It cost me $1300 to move from WI to NC with a 14' Uhaul and a flatbed for my car. That doesn't include gas, food, hotel, etc. Take into consideration a deposit on an apartment too.

If you have any other questions, let me know!
