I know a LOT of MA's end up in Bahrain. Up until a week or so ago, it was an unaccompanied tour, but now they've opened it up to adult dependents for now. That would definitely be an overseas option.

I'm a little confused by your details. He must be in A school right now if he's almost rated. A school is the initial training sailors are put through for their rating. That must be successfully completed before being rated. Are you referring to a possible "C" school down the road? Are you assuming his E4 will be automatic? Just passing the test doesn't guarantee advancement in the Navy. Lots of people pass the test every cycle but receive PNA's (Pass No Advance).

Anyway, as an MA, he should be able to go to any overseas location. They need MA's everywhere!

How random, well to answer your questions:

    http://www.navyadvancement.com/milit...s-overseas.php

It should link you to overseas naval bases. Time on the base really does vary. Usually since it's expensive to move a family overseas the tours are for at least 2-3 years.

There are some places where families can't go, but Bahrain did open up, except only to adult dependents, as was said.

Going overseas is a good experience, I highly recommend that everyone should try it at least once. Sometimes the culture shock isn't what you expect & you may get home sick, but it's definitely a new experience. DH and I have both lived overseas before while we were dependents of our parents (we are military brats, my dad is retired, his will be soon)
