How do you keep in touch?

    Advertisements
DH is going to be in Japan for 2 years and I've looked into the cost of calling and WOW... $1.62 a min is outrageous... How do you keep in touch with your SO while they are away? What works best for regular contact and what is most cost effective for you and for them?

Look into that magicjack thing, get two of them and call that way. http://www.magicjack.com/9/index.asp I've considered getting a couple myself for deployments/schools.

Vonage has VERY cheap international rates...

In the past my husband has used morale calls via DSN and emails to get in touch. And , I've paid expensive phone bills with LONG international calls on them, one month our bill was $500, and worth every penny.

Well, I'm what I am and I'm what I'm not
and I'm sure happy with what Iíve got
I live to love and laugh alot
    and thatís all I need

    GET A VONAGE PHONE!!!
I am serious! its so cheap and it makes life so so so much easier.

buy it online or get it as best buy and just use your HOME (stateside) billing addresses etc.

all he has to do is plug it into his computer/internet and he can have your area code (or which ever stateside area code you choose for that matter) and you can talk all you want- just like any other stateside landline phone.

You can pay monthly its like 24.99 or you can buy a year for like 300! and If you enter in my phone number when you sign up we'll both get discounts!

If you are feeling frightened about what comes next, don't be. Embrace the uncertainty. Allow it to lead you places. Be brave as it challenges you to exercise both your heart and your mind as you create your own path towards happiness, don't waste time with regret. Spin wildly into your next action. Enjoy the present, each moment, as it comes; because you'll never get another one quite like it. And if you should ever look up and find yourself lost, simply take a breath and start over. Retrace your steps and go back to the purest place in your heart where your hope lives. You'll find your way again.

My "sister" (she's like my best-friend) is in Japan and she uses Skype. She had Vonage but had way too many problems with them, so she switched to Skype.

My husband is deployed and he uses Skype through his PSP and we pay $2.95/month for it. It's not a bad price by any means and it works well.

Ok so I'm very unfamiliar with Skype. How does it work with a paid account?

emails, IM, he can also get phonecards from the bx or USO over there that have great rates. We found one which was like 9c or 14c a min or something like that. It's a blue one.
