    Buying...renting???

    Advertisements
I'm not sure if this is in the right place. So, sorry if it isn't. I have a question. When you go to a duty station, do you normally rent or buy a house? Where we are going rentals are crazy high and our BAH will only be 963. So, buying a house seems more logical, but would you sell it if you leave or what?

Right now, in the States? Conflicted.

Buying sounds good because prices are low, low, low! thanks to the screwed up economy and all the foreclosures. However, being military, you could PCS again in six months, a year, who knows! I'd worry mightily about trying to resell a house in a crap market.

I personally prefer the renting while we are AD because of the constant moving.

if you can't live there for at least 2 years and if you have never bought before I would advise against buying. aside from paying the mortgage are you ready for home ownership? do you know what it entails to maintain a home of your own. Its more then just paying the mortgage.

    I will miss you SOS...

I always thought military people who bought houses were crazy, but I'm pretty sure dh and I will buy next place we go. We are tired of renting a house and not being able to make it the way we like it. You can always rent it out through your base housing office, or a real estate company so they will handle everything since you won't be there to deal with any issues. That way you can sell if it will, or rent out if it doesn't.

it will depend on how long you will be there- if you plan on being there 3-4 yrs absolutley buy now! prices are at an all time low- and what happens to a low priced home in 2 yrs- why it will only go up!
the market will change but it will take 2-3 yrs for it to do it-

you may need to rent it if you leave before that - but rental homes are a good investment too -
