Confused Questions about the Merchant Marines

    Advertisements
I know this has been asked before, but the most recent thread I found was over 5 years old, so here goes!

Any of y'all involved or have family in the Merchant Marines? DB is enlisted, and he's really been talking about heading in that direction, and not to the Navy Academy, like he's always wanted. Apparently the job appeals a lot more to him. I know it's not really military, but I'm curious as to what kind of benefits/programs exist for them, if any. I also wonder about time commitment and location, just because from what I have read, they can be basically anywhere near water.

As for the academy, what is it like? Does it have the same rules and regs of the Naval Academy or more relaxed? What kind of time are we looking at as a couple? 4 years or more? Less?

I'm sorry for all the questions, I really just want to get a sense of what I might be getting myself into with DB.

and then I found this: All graduates have a service obligation upon graduation that provides the most career options offered by any of the federal academy.
•Graduates can choose to work five years in the United States maritime industry with eight years of service as an officer in any reserve unit of the armed forces.
•Or five years active duty in any of the nation’s armed forces

Thanks! I've been looking at their webpage, and been a bit lost. This helps a bit. I really appreciate it
