I think the way DF explained it to me is Cpl is "promotable specialist". He was Cpl for a VERY short time before he got his Sgt. Like...a month!

some skip cpl all together and go straight to sgt.

SPC is around so that you get used to being in charge of privates etc.

CPL is just a step in the middle before becoming SGT, in that time you'll be doing BNCOC, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course Phase 1 & 2 in order to gain promotion points as well as experience to BECOME a Sgt... but again, some just skip it all together and go straight to Sgt and start these classes.

Make sense? LOL I did these classes (worked at the building where the classes were taught) while @ Camp Casey (korea) and had to learn about em!
Trying to figure it all out...

DH told me you get corporal when you pass the board for Sgt but don't have the points to get promoted.

Do you mean the E-5 school? BNCOC is the E-6 school. You have to be E-5 to go there. I am not sure what the E-5 school is anymore, when my husband went it was PLDC.

Corp is considered an nco and you don't have to get to corp to b promoted to sgt, my husband is a specialist and is getting his packet done for his E5.

BNCOC is for E-6's. And PLDC is now WLC.

oh wow I didnt know BNCOC had phases, like 2 schools? I am pretty sure my husband just went to Goodfellow for like 3 months but that was a long time ago. He is going to ANCOC as soon as he gets home, and I think that is shorter than his BNCOC was, which makes no sense to me.
