Unemployment after Active Duty
Does he file in the state we live in now or his state of record? His SOR is Wyoming, but we recently purchased a house here, which I believe might make us residents here... (I already am a resident).
TIA! |

I am pretty sure you have to file in the state of record but can have the unemployment checks forwarded to his location now. I am sure he can call the state unemployment office to figure it out. I would check to see if there are any other programs out there too that helps people just coming off active duty find jobs in various fields. I have heard of this before but not sure of any names. Also if he hasn't yet now would be a good time to apply the GI Bill and go to school while also getting some financial benefits from that.

So, does this mean that my husband can file in his state of record (PA) whilst living in Arizona and get the checks sent to our address in AZ?

I believe he still can depending on state laws. As long as he stays a state citizen of PA and just has the mail forwarded to the AZ address as a "temporary address" there should be no problem as far as I know.

Did your husband go to his TAP workshop? The dept. of labor representative goes in depth with unemployment. If you're elgible, you can file for unemployment in almost any state in the US after leaving active duty...and believe me the rates are VASTLY different depending on the state. I believe some states offered 200 a week whereas others went into the 500's. You just need to be able to file for unemployment and use an address in that state. So lets say you have friends or family or anybody you know that lives in Masachussets. File there.
I'm pretty sure transitioning services work much the same for all the services, but I just got started working as a transitioning counselor in the army and we highly recommend everyone go to their VA benefits briefing and the employment workshop. They go over a lot in those workshops. |

It doesn't matter. K filed in CT. He was living in ME and his former duty station was NC. I don't remember who he talked to, but he was told to file in CT because their pay was higher.
![]() ETA: And he used his Maine address. There weren't any problems.
