My SIT sent me his name and flag patch in the mail. He sent this about 3 weeks before he graduates from AIT. In his letter he didn't mention the patches at all. Does anyone have any idea why he would send them to me?

I wouldn't overthink it, especially if he didn't mention them in his letter. You can buy name tapes and flag patches at the uniform store on base pretty easily.
