Help! Moving to his Tech?
Hi! I'm new here, Hannah. My husband, Bryn, just left for basic on the 6th (it's been torture but that's another post.) He's set to graduate on the 3rd of December and I want to be living near him and eventually with him for his Tech School. We think that his Tech will be in Wichita Falls, TX for 205 days (bio medical equipment specialist.) I want to move out there as soon as he graduates from Basic. There's nothing out here for me and if I can see him even just an hour a week it's worth it. But I've heard rumors that if I move now, the military won't pay for me to move my stuff to him later (when it's approved.) I know honesty is the best policy, but how do they even know I'm living there? Is this rumor true? HELP!
By the way- I'm so glad I found this site. I haven't been able to talk to anyone, so this is a breath of fresh air! Thanks! |

I will have to ask DF the exacts, but if you are married and he is there for a certain amount of weeks, he can live with you. That might be after he reaches a certain phase (phase 3) in tech school because they have strict rules in the first 2 phases. I will ask him and get back to you.

I moved myself and our DD to Wichita Falls once DH started Tech and got an apartment off base. He went and filied some paper work saying that the new address was in Wichita Falls and then they payed to move us to our next base without a question.

I believe if he is there longer than 6 months, you can be there with him. Even if you do move, they WILL pay for your PCS, they just will not fund for you to move from where you are now to Sheppard. I know a few people pack what they can in their car, put the rest in storage and get a apartment off base for the time during tech.
My husband is currently at Sheppard, and i had thought about doing the same thing, but it just wasn't fesible for me to do that, especially since after he is done at Sheppard he has to go to Davis-Monthan in Arizona for who knows how long for his hot training. Once your husband actually gets to Tech school he will have more specifics for you, though the counselors will advise him to not have you move.He won't be able to be off base with you until Phase three any way so you will have time to plan. IF you do move, rememeber that ALOT of his time is going to have to be spent studying. Tests and such are taken very seriously. GL!! ETA: this is from my experience. Things may be a tad different, but since they are both at Sheppard (or will be) this should be close enough.

Ok. So I talked to DF and he said that as long as he is there for at least 20 weeks (205 days obviously qualifies) that the military should pay for you to move there with him. And he will have to wait till phase 3 to move with you, but that will only take about a month.

Like others have said if it's more than 20 weeks they will pay to move you out. My DH left for basic on the 1st so we're pretty much going through this at the same time
. Anyway, my DH's tech school is only 15 weeks but I'm going to be moving with a friend who is a few hours away from him so that I can visit on weekends if he's allowed out. I'm also moving for different reasons, but that's another story. I decided that if it was more than 10 weeks it was worth moving for, I don't like being away from him that long if I don't have to. I'd say go for it, even if they won't pay to move you out there, especially if there's nothing holding you back. |
