Which would you suggest?
DB leaves for AF basic next month. Should I go see him off?
My brother left for the Navy a couple years ago and we went to see him get sworn in and say goodbyes and it was hard, but I just thought that was what everyone was supposed to do, but now that I'm thinking about it: would it be better to say goodbyes at home and send him on his way or would it be better say goodbye and then the next day go say goodbyes again before he flys out? What did you do with your DB, DF, DH? What would you suggest? |

I would say dont go. I was a big blubbery mess and had a horrible drive home. It would have been easier for me saying goodbye at the house, rather than after they swear in and you have like 2 minutes to say your final goodbye before they go. I hated it, it was terrible.
Im sure some people are going to say yes go, but Im sticking with no.

Ask him. But when you ask him make sure he knows that you don't mind either way, it's whatever he wants.
The truth is no matter where you say goodbye it's going to be really difficult and you're probably going to just want to cry and hold him. You can't really do that at the airport if a bunch of people go. Find out how many people are going, and ask him what he wants, and base your decision on that. ![]() ETA I did go, but no one else came with me. I ended up spending a good portion of the day with him, we got to eat lunch together, and i got a gate pass at the airport and walked him all the way to the gate and hung out until he boarded. It sucked but honestly I wouldn't have done it any other way. Like I said though, it depends on how many other people are going and what he wants. |

Whichever feels right for you. Saying farewell at home can be more personal and private...whereas seeing them off you get that extra time with them. It's all about personal preference I suppose...I know what I saw DH off I was a mess the whole drive home and there was a snow storm so that wasn't easy! But I really enjoyed the extra time I got to spend with him.

I remember it being really hard seeing my brother off because we were reallyyyy close and I know its going to a millionnnnnnnnn times harder to tell Ry bye.
I've asked him which he would prefer and to be honest, IDK if he really cares because he knows its going to be hard no matter what. I would love to be able to go and see him off for the sake of memories and pictures, but I don't know if I can handle it I bet he'll chose to say goodbye at home because he's a really private person. Its really just up to him ...

I went to MEPS with DF the day he left for BMT. It was hard on both of us. DF didnt like seeing me standing there alone all teary-eyed as he drove off on the bus. He said he had a hard time sleeping because that image was stuck in his head. At the same time it gave us a chance to talk before he left cause I got to sit with him while he ate lunch. The thing you need to know is that he can leave at any time. DF and I thought he still had 2 hours before he was leaving, but the bus got there early. I wish it would have gone better, but I dont regret it.
If you dont want to stay till he leaves, you could also just hang out with him at the hotel the night before. That's what I did with his family. He still had to sleep in his own room though. Stay the night at the hotel and the next morning just watch him swear in. The swear in is an amazing experience. It makes the whole thing feel real. Then say goodbye then. Also, our goodbye as literally 8 seconds. They marched out to the bus, he turned to me, gave me a quic hug and kiss, and he was gone. It's really fast, so get a good hug and kiss before.

When my ex went to basic, I spent the night before with him (our friends had a Birthday/graduation/going away party for me, Matt and Andy) Our friends Andy and Renee went with me to say goodbye to him. It was actually pretty sweet. A lot of hugs and kisses and goodbyes.
I was very glad I went
