    Air Force Changes Tuition Assistance

    Week of September 09, 2013

Airmen applying for tuition assistance (TA) in fiscal 2014 will see several changes in both eligibility for and administration of the program. The application window for classes beginning on or after Oct. 1 will not open until Sept. 9 to allow for system updates. This program is applicable to Guard and Reserve only when they are activated. Airmen who apply for TA will be required to obtain supervisor approval for all requests. Requests for TA for foreign language courses will only be approved if they are part of a degree or are on the approved language shortage list. TA requests from Airmen who have unfavorable information files, failed/overdue physical fitness testing, received referral performance reports or are on a control roster will automatically be denied. The fundamental financial benefits of TA are unchanged. Airmen should contact their base education office for more details or for assistance in applying.

Sounds like a great change. It still allows people to get assistance, but sets some basic parameters for eligibility.

Looks fair to me. I was afraid they would make TA almost impossible to obtain but those parameters just seem to be common sense to me. If you're doing a crappy job at work, what makes anyone think they would do any better by adding the stress of college?

I was afraid as well, but these are actually pretty good common sense changes.

Am I reading this correctly, that Guard/Reserves would only be eligible if activated? If so, that kinda sucks as that has been one of the guard's main selling points.

ETA - No, I'm not trying to start another Guard v. Active Duty shit storm, just stating it kinda sucks.

I like this, and I hope it transfers over to other branches. This is so much better than taking it away completely, and the only unfair thing to me is the reservist thing, but there's scholarships for them at least.

If I remember reading correctly all 5 branches now have the same policies.

It's already been this way for the Army.
