    I'm married now.... DEERS? helpppp

    Advertisements
I thought I had this all figured out but maybe not.

DH was gonna take me to base to enroll me in DEERS today. Now I'm not so sure I have all the necessary papers....

    I have: Official marriage license
Passport (was told this would work in place of SS card...)

....but I don't have my birth certificate or an actual SS card...and now I'm seeing that I will need both of these. Any ideas?

Call the DEERS office in case they won't take the passport that way you don't waste a trip and can start on getting a copy of your BC and SS card now. Did you not need either of those to apply for your marriage license or change your name?

Your best bet is to call the DEERS office that you will be going to and tell them what you have and see what they want you to bring.

I didn't need either of them for the marriage license and for name change they just need marriage certificate, Driver's license & passport.

Name change (I believe) is done at the social security office, not DEERS.
You will be recognized by the military that you're married, but anywhere else not affiliated you'll still be recognized with your maiden name.

    Edit.

Unless the DEERS office is the social security office O.o figured the two were 2 different buildings.

Sometimes the military will not change your name on your military ID either without changing it through SS & DMV first... so while they will recognize that your married, you would still have to go by your maiden name until you legally change it. Depends on the office & person who is doing your paperwork/ID.

I was able to get into deers with my birth certificate and marriage cert. I had to come back in 30 (i think?) days with my married name on my SS card andofficial marriage license. I would call the office to double check. I do know that they won't let you do anything without your sponsor present or a POA.
