    Tricare

Can someone please explain the difference between Tricare Prime and Tricare Standard for me? I think I have them mixed up.

Prime-Care on base. You have a primary care doctor. No bills
Standard-Care off base, by the dr of your choice. Typically don't need prior authorization to see a doctor or something. You get billed for whatever insurance doesn't pay for services.
The "extra" part of standard (standard and extra) I think is the ability to see an out of network dr but pay a larger amount.

But you were assigned that doctor right? They just assigned you to a place off post?

Ok.. so yes, with Prime you have ability to go off base, apparently. I just know with standard I couldn't be seen on base unless there was no other choice.
    TRICARE Prime

Tricare prime it's 100% free for everything, but it 100% SUCKS to me(I'd rather be back on medicaid than ever do prime again )

You can only go to primary doctors they pick for you, and you can only go to specialists they want you to go to. You can say you want a female or male but that is about it as far as how picky you get to be. At least that was my experience I had only 3 primary doctors to choose from for our area when we moved to San Diego.. Then when I needed specialists I had ZERO say so in who I saw or when I saw them. They just called me and said "You're going to this doctor on this day." If I had to change it it was normally me waiting another month or longer. So I normally just sucked it up and figured out a way to work out the day and time they told me. (Happened every single time D or I needed to see anyone outside of our primary doctor.. Like I didn't even go to the same OBGYN twice in a row, because the time I needed to go they had openings on base. So they flat out refused to pay for me to see the OBGYN I wanted to see again. Even though they had referred me to her before, and had paid for me to see her twice before... Even with a referral from my primary it got over turned by Tri-care because they wanted me to be seen on base since it was cheaper for them to do it that way. )

Tricare Standard. You have to pay but to me it's fully worth it. You can see ANY primary doctor of your choosing as long as they take Tricare. Then you can see any specialist your primary refers you to instead of HAVING to go on base if they have an opening for you to go in on base. You have much more freedom and you are way more likely to get to keep the doctors you are comfortable with treating you. Instead of praying for the luck of the draw each time you need a referral like what happened to me(and DD) every single time with Tricare Prime. Which sucked because we ended up randomly seeing some doctors that I'm not even sure how they have/had medical licenses...

Now with Standard? I have hand picked DD's primary and my primary, and I also got to hand pick the doctor that maybe doing my daughters surgery. Before I'd be taking DD to god only knows what doctor on base, and then maybe getting a whole new doctor for the surgery(that is what happened with me when I had a procedure done a few years ago while I was on prime...) That would be a HELL no if they just blindly gave me a doctor for DD. Not okay at all for this mamma! So just another reason I am loving Standard I get so much more say so with who touches me and my daughter! .

Awesome that helps a lot. I called the hotline to make an eye appointment and they told me that only ADSM's get eye appointments thru the hotline but that as a dependent I have to go somewhere off post that excepts Tricare Prime. It had me confused since at our last post I had to make my appointments thru the hotline.
