    Allergy Shots

    Advertisements
I currently have Kaiser and get weekly allergy shots. The DH is leaving for boot camp soon so hopefully I'll be enrolled in Tricare soon. I was thinking about dropping my employer's Kaiser plan to save money. Does anyone know if I will be able to get allergy shots on Tricare? Should I go with Tricare Standard so I can pick any specialist?

I got the Epi-Pen auto-injector through Tricare. They also covered my weekly visits to the local Allergy clinic for my allergy shots (instead of auto-injecting the Epi-pen myself, the clinic did it for me on a weekly basis). I did have to see my PCM for a referral to the allergist.

Do you have standard or prime? I guess it probably wouldn't be too difficult to get a referral since I've been on the shots for years. Maybe I'll hold off on canceling my own insurance until I know for sure.

I am sorry for the delay. I haven't checked your thread since my last post.

On Prime you will need a referral from your PCM. I do not know how civilian HIs work. I remember, when I went to the Allergy Clinic for my weekly allergy shots and meds, I was on Prime. The Allergist was an off base Doctor but I still needed the referral from my PCM. I believe they took both Prime and Standard. The only difference would have been that on Standard they would have maybe charged me co-pay. Since, I was on Prime, I did not had to pay anything.

I just switched to Standard a couple of days ago and I am waiting for it to take effect Oct 1. I will be looking for a new PCM and Allergist. Should be fun.

Standard should be effective automatically unless you were already on Prime, but even then you can choose the start date.

I have always been Prime and have seen several allergist and done shots over the years with no issues. It's not a problem as long as your primary puts the referral in and the allergist does the request to continue the treatment for shots. I'll actually be starting the process here soon to be re-tested since I just had another new allergic reaction, its time to see what else i'm allergic to.
