    Question about school loans...

    Advertisements
Sooo... Hubbie's been out of the Army for almost a year now... (WOW that went fast!) and now I'm thinking about joining... My main question is whether or not any branch would pay off my school loans. I've got about 25k in school loans (and a B.S. Biology! ) and I've found a lot of mixed answers by googling...

If it matters I'd almost certainly be going in as an officer (I mean, I might as well since I can!), and I'm probably thinking Army or Marines. I just wanted to know if you more experienced people's knew anything about that. I really want to join anyway (hubby is good with it so that's not an issue) but knowing that they'd pay off my school loans would definitely sweeten the deal.

    Thanks for any info!!

From my personal research each branch is different in what they offer and depend on the need they have for recruitment. I spoke with the AF and the Army. I am in public health so the demand was only for the AF. I was completely sold on joining until they came back and told me I would need a PhD in a different major. We shall see when I complete my degree if they are back in demand!

I spoke to a recruiter for officers that I found through my school. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I think it very much depends on AFSC (which is Air Force lingo for job code, I can never remember what the Army and Marines call it. MOS?) and the branch.

Have you talked to an officer recruiter yet? They will have the most current information. I can tell you that my cousin had her school loans paid for, but she was a Air Force, had completed medical school and it was ten years ago. She agreed to become a pediatric allergy specialist to get her undergrad and med school loans paid off. That's the only example that I have any personal knowledge.

AFAIK if the AF does it it would only be for medical career fields.

The other question you want to ask is if you would still get the GI Bill. I seem to remember reading that if they pay off your student loans then you are not eligible for the GI Bill.

Navy only does loan forgiveness for enlisting not commissioning. I would look into that.

I know Army does, but I'm pretty sure it's only for enlisted too and not officers. It's usually instead of the GI Bill.

This link says Army no longer does for direct commission, but the Marines may.

Also commissions aren't as easy to get as they were 5 and 6 years ago, even with the Army. ROTC guys who want active duty slots are often getting reserve slots. Just something to think about.
