    Divorce - military ID

    Advertisements
Are you supposed to give your dependent ID back at the time of divorce?

I just got an email from exDH demanding the ID - hum its been like two years its loooong gone in the shredder by now lol actually I shredded it before the divorce was over I "had" to get rid of all that had to do with him for sanity reasons lol - but makes me wonder was I supposed to give it to him?! From what I understood you can't even use it after as soon as it hits the system the scanners will show the ID as being expired, at least thats what JAG told me but the guy was brand new so not sure how right the info I got was. Anyone know?

ps. this is the marine corps incase it makes a difference?

You don't turn it into him, but rather the Pass/ID office... if you didn't you could be liable, but likely nothing will happen. I doubt they will come looking for you. As you said, if someone tries to get on base with it (and they actually scan it) it will be confiscated. If you still have it, turn it into the nearest base.. if you don't... i wouldn't even worry about it.

Odd. Around here, you wouldn't even have been able to leave without turning your id in & then escorted off base.

But yes, you were supposed to give it back. Not to him, but to the office.

Yes, those should've been turned in as well. You can turn them into the visitors center on base, expired or not.

You're supposed to turn it in, along with the sticker off your windshield (which was super fun to chip off and return in like 9 thousand pieces). I just put the pieces on a blank piece of paper and taped them down. It looks funky, but it worked. I handed my stuff over to my ex, and he turned them in with no problem.

If you don't have it, I would just tell him to tell his command the truth. I'm sure they have bigger issues to worry about. I would def do the base sticker ASAP tho. Just so as not to appear difficult or with malintent. Like, "hey, this happened but here, you can have the part that I do have."

I did not return mine, I actually held onto it for years after the divorce was final. as for the tags, I just scraped them off and threw them away. that was 21 years ago. no one ever came after me

One last question - does it need to be a base of the branch? Or do they all have the same systems to update each other?
