    Tricare Newb

    Advertisements
At this point, I've decided I'm going to start with Tricare Prime unless I have any problems with it. At least, that's the advice I've been given thus far.

First things first - I live in Boston. DH lives about 4 hours away. The closest real base is Groton and I don't have my car up here since I don't need it.

Can I see any PCP I want to as long as they accept Tricare? Clearly I would want to see someone in Boston - not Saratoga or Groton . Say I need to go to see a specialist (i.e. OBGYN), do I need a referral from a PCP first?

Please bear with me, I'm new to this part of military life!

Yes...you can go to any Tricare Prime provider.

If you call them they can tell you if there are any in your area.

With Tricare Prime, you will need a referral to be seen offbase for anything, being that you live so far from a base, Call Tricare and they can give you an extended referral to see a PCM offbase. for any specialist visits, you will need a referral from that PCM (and approved by Tricare) to go to the specialist

Yep. Call and they'll help you find someone who takes Tricare.

Can you go to Hanscom AFB? That is closer to Boston than Groton, Ct.

Also, Stephanie beat me to it! If you live a certain distance away from an AD base, Tricare will assign you to a civilian PCP, without needing a referral. I would call Tricare, first!

I just signed onto Tricare Prime and since we live "too far from base" (literally, 22 miles away) they assigned me a civilian PCM and i go to her to do all my appointments & referrals for other doctors (gyno, eyedoc, dermatologist, etc)
    we kicked deployment #2's butt!
