    Genetic testing covered through Tricare?

    Advertisements
Hi! My Dr asked me last week (I am going to be 9 weeks pregnant) if I was interested in gentetic testing to test for downs and spina bifida. I said yes and now she is sending me to a hospital to do the test. I called tri-care to see if this test was covered and the lady said it is a "limited benefit." My Dr has to put in a referral to Tri-care wirth specific codes to tell them exactly what they are testing and why, and three days later I'll get a letter stating whether or not it will bed covered. As to my knowledge there is nothing wrong with my pregnancy except I conceived on clomid and I have some cysts (common). Has anyone been through this and just decided they wanted to do it? Was it covered? If not how much did you pay out of pocket?

According to the Covered Services page, it says genetic testing may be covered when medically necessary. Though I don't see how genetic testing can't be medically necessary, KWIM?

Was covered for me. It's a pretty normal test to order during pregnancy.
