Is it true that if your SO is in Iraq or Afghanistan, they will recieve free health insurance from the VA?

If this is true, how long do they have to be in country for?

I'm not a spouse yet, but I'm confused. Don't they receive 'free' health insurance through Tricare anyway?
Never do anything halfway unless you want to be half happy.

Is this a dream? If it is, please don't wake me from this high. I'd become comfortably numb
until you opened up my eyes to what it's like when everything is right...I can't believe you found me ♥

Hard to tell from her OP, but I believe she is referring to if they served in Iraq/Afg and got out or are reserves or something.

While active duty or on active orders they do get Tricare, which is free. And if a member stays 20 years they do get VA benefits, but that doesn't always include free healthcare, there are rules to get the free healthcare. If they get injured during combat, that is also something entirely different with the VA.

There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

We were told that if they do a deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan, they will recieve 5 years of health benefits from the VA.

Sorry, I was probably really vague when I first posted.

If you get out when your contract is up, the next day you no longer have insurance. We will have to get temporary insurance until we get new jobs.

    FUN...not.

No, you still recieve tricare for either 30 or 60 days..can't remember which, to give you time to find a job and get other insurance.

Really? I thought once you are done, so are your benefits. If our contract is up at the end of the month, I thought the next month we have no benefits.

DH needs to go to TAPS class!
