Question Questions for DH's recently widowed mother

    Advertisements
As some of you know DH's father passed away last night. He was in Vietnam and lost his leg while he was fighting. So, he's been medically covered since then. Also getting 100% disability from the VA and SSI. I'm just wondering, since she is now a widow, is there anything that is available to her? Like, will she still have health insurance? Does she get his pension? Stuff like that. If you need to know more, just ask or tell me and I'll see what info I can get. Thanks everyone.

I am not sure about the health care portion, was he medically retired? For his pension, do you know if they signed up for SBP (survivor benefit plan)?

DH says that he was medically retired. 100%, if that matters. As for a survivor benefit plan his mother has no idea. Do you know where she could find that out from?

The best thing she can do is make an appointment at the local VA and find out what she is entitled to. Best to get the most current accurate info from the source.

She should take his 214 and any supporting documentation with her.

Contact the VA asap, she is eligible for survivor benefits and if he was medically retired I do believe she gets healthcare through tricare? I remember giving widows their husbands retiree cards with their info because they were given those benefits.

Welcome to Widows of Deceased Veterans Foundation

Compensation & Pension Service, Survivors Home

    These might help.

Again, I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

She does have healthcare through Tricare. I think she's going to call tomorrow and see if she'll still be eligible. I will tell her right now to call the VA asap. Thanks all.

good luck and many to everyone. If she is low income I do believe she can receive a pension as well. All she needs to do is make an appointment with Eligibility and Enrollment. They'll tell you what you will need.
