    FAQs:
    Q. Does my family member have to attend every drill?
Upon commiting to serving as a citizen-soldier, your family member is obligated to drill attendance. Each commander, however, is provided the latitude to make exceptions or to offer an alternative drill date (referred to as “split training”) under exceptional circumstances, such as a family emergency or a significant civilian employment conflict. For Example, my DH had to SUTA a drill for our wedding and on other occasions has requested leave for a drill months in advance.

    Q. How do I find out what benefits are available to our family?
Each unit seeks to share information about benefits with soldiers and family members. Methods of doing this include inviting family members to annual briefings and sending printed information home with soldiers. Most units also have a Family Readiness Group that provides support, information and assistance to soldiers and their families. Also, I can't say it enough...www.militaryonesource.com.

    Q. Will my family receive the same entitlements and benefits and as other Active Duty soldiers?
Yes. Your family will receive the same benefits as all active duty soldiers such as healthcare at a cost when not in AD status(TRICARE Select), dental (Delta Dental), Commissary and PX privileges, and Active Duty dependant Identification cards.

    Q. What's the difference between Reserves and National Guard?
NG and reserve are different, but similar. They are both the "reserve " component of the Army. The difference is that the Reserve are federally funded, so they fall under only the federal government. Whereas the NG falls under state, then federal government(s). (My DH says you just get paid from a different pot.)

    Q. How does health insurance work for National Guard? Is it the same Tricare that active duty is familiar with or is it different?
It is basically the same thing, it's called tricare reserve select, but you have to pay for it monthly. It's, about, $180 a month. It's basically like tricare standard, as I understand. (Thank you, Emily, for answering some of these questions!)

    Q. What benefits do you receive from the National Guard? I read that BAH is a no go, is there anything you receive besides drill pay? What exactly is drill pay?
When he is at drill, that is drill pay. it's his money from working. I don't think there is any extra benefits, unless it's signed into his contract or whatever. If you are on orders for more than 30 consecutive days, you get all the benefits that you would get if you were active duty.

    Q. What is AGR?
Active Guard Reserve (AGR) is a full time job. It's kind of like being on Active Duty but you're still part of the National Guard. (Not to be confused with full-time Guard or DoD contracted throughout the month)

I will add more FAQs as I come across them. If you know of any or have one please post it in this thread. Also, if you have any valuable links or resources feel free to share.

I'm not sure if the bah question is completely accurate- DF doesn't always get it, but it seems like anytime it's more than a 2 day drill (I think, it might be 3. I can ask) he does. His last one was 8 days and his les says:BASIC PAY
    SUBSISTENCE ALWS
    BAH TYPE II

This might be helpful as reservists/ ng gearing up for deployment will have longer/more frequent drills.

One question I get asked a lot is what kind of situations would make DF be activated (he's guard, but I'm sure the same goes for reservists). Also, I didn't know MIL one source could be used by guard members- may be helpful to include.

Is he Guard or Reserve? DH is Guard and has never received BAH unless it was for orders more than 30 days. He has, however, received travel pay for when he's done courses and training seminars that were far away.

He's guard. He's also gotten travel pay like your DH. That's copied right from his LES, and he has gotten it multiple times (anytime I can think of over 2 or 3 days like I said). I can ask DF about it tomorrow. That's odd.

I wouldn't think this makes even any sense, but maybe it's a state thing? Or length of service? Hmm. I'll definitely ask and let you know what he says.

Yeah, please do. Maybe DH is getting screwed.

I'm now worried we're going to owe the military money!

Enlisted and Officer Pay | Guard Pay | NATIONAL GUARD

That has the pay scale for the national guard and what they can expect in different circumstances. Definitely a helpful link.

Adding that to the OP, thank you.
