    Help GI bill

    Advertisements
How does it work for him? And is he eligible for it if he goes from active duty to reserves?

I know this is probably a really basic thing, but I don't want to ask DF because he's trying to figure out what is best and I do NOT want money to be a factor in what is best for him/us. So I'm worrying about that and trying to figure it out first. I've been on the VA website for about an hour and the only thing I have learned is that his school is covered, but I don't know if it's all or part.

By biggest thing, is one time I heard that once you started a school they would only pay for that school. So if he wanted to go to a community college at first, it would be better for us to pay for that out of pocket and then use the GI bill for the rest of the schooling?

Sorry if this is dumb. I don't do well with reading government "talk" lol

I guess this should have gone in "after active duty." I didn't even realize that was there until after I posted this, oops. Sorry!

There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful
as expectation of something better tomorrow.

Thanks, DF decided to propose a pretty big change in our plans for next year and I'm trying to figure out exactly how I feel about it and what that means for us and this is a huge part of it. I'm just... all confused lol

If he's on the post 9/11 GI Bill its 36 months at any school they will cover (they currently don't cover ceritificate programs but this is supposed to be changing). He will get BAH at the E-5 with dependent rate as long as he's on the post 9/11 GI Bill and $1000 book stipened (yearly I think). Depending on where he goes to school some people can live entirely off the BAH (I know I could in Tampa but definitely wouldn't be able to in a poorer area). But at least housing and tuition is covered in full.

Thanks! I didn't know about the BAH part! That's awesome.

Is that available if he's a part of the reserves? Or does he have to be out completely?

Pretty sure as long as he's off active duty its true... you'd have to talk to an education person to be sure though.

he can use the GI bill while in Active reserves-

the new bill pays BAH based on the brick and mortar school location- they pay part BAH for all online schools.

the vet gets 36 months of college- and they pay the instate tuituon costs and then give 1,000 dollars a yr for books.

the bill now pays the school directly for the tuition.
