    ID card SSN Removal

    Advertisements
I received an email this morning from out Key Spouse Co-ordinator. As of June all SSN's will be removed from DoD ID cards. The dependents SSN will not be X'd out, they will not be there at all. Also your sponsor's SSN will no longer be on dependent's ID cards. Military member's SSN's will be replaced with a DoD Identification Number. I have added the FAQ's from the email below.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q. Who will get a new ID card?
A All DoD ID cardholders will get a new ID card with a DoD ID Number in place of their SSN.
    Q. When should I go get my new ID card?
    A. Current ID cards should not be replaced until your card is within 30 days of its expiration date. If
your ID card has an INDEF expiration date, and you would like your SSN removed, contact your
nearest RAPIDS ID Card facility for an appointment.
    Q. Will my ID be rejected without a visible SSN?
    A. Your ID should not be rejected but you may be asked to verbally state your SSN or sponsorís SSN
    to access benefits.
    Q. Will my medical provider use my DoD Benefits Number to process my claims?
    A. Until all ID cards are replaced, providers may use either your SSN or DoD benefits number.
    Q. Where can I get my new ID card?
    A. ID cards are available at over 1,500 RAPIDS ID card centers worldwide. Visit the RAPIDS Site
Locator at (www.dmdc.osd.mil/rsl/owa/home) to find a location near you.
    Q. What should I bring?

ID. Visit (www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf) for more information.

    Very good move.

I've seen dependent ID cards that have had the dependents SSN removed and it said something like "Declined".

I heard about this like 2-3 weeks ago...

ID cards won't be replaced until they expire. SSN will still be used/required for MTF and calling Tricare.

You can replace your ID card when the changeover happens if you want to. But they would rather people wait so there isn't a mad rush. I was just at our MPF today getting a new card because DH was promoted and I needed to get a rank change on mine and that is what I was told.

Interesting. My ID says my social is on file but DH's is on it. Good to know it doesn't have to be changed. I heard spouses don't have to change their cards for rank though either, only the member since... well its their rank not ours really.

Interesting about the DoD ID number! I suppose that's what they'll be using to bill for Tricare and everything now?

They X'd out my SSN, which I thought was odd since they put it on my ID when I married my ex (uhhh 10.5 years ago LOL).

    Thanks for the heads up!

    I heard that too.

Actually DH kept his old card with the wrong rank on it for more than a year, it only got changed because when we PCS'd to Fort Hood they made him get a new one.

I do think it's good that SSNs won't be on the card anymore, but it'll take a bit for me to get used to. That was always my go-to whenever I was dealing with someone who wanted his SSN. I guess I'll have to actually memorize it now.

Thanks for the heads up. Mine doesn't expire for three more years so I worry about it when I absolutely have to.
