    Tricare Prime and counseling

    Advertisements
In order to get a counselor or therapist or psychiatrist or whatever it is on TriCare Prime, do I need to get a referral from my PCP?
From what I understand, based on what I've read online, i can just call a place and set up an appointment and TriCare will cover the first eit sessions, then the person im seeing will have to fill out a form for referral for additinal sessions and they take care of all that paperwork. Is that right or am i misunderstanding?

And advice would be greatly appreciated as I would like to take care of a lll of this tomorrow and just get it done.

I've always asked for a referral first, because I'm paranoid, but I've been told that I don't need one. Use the tri-care website to search for a counselor that takes tri-care.

    Use this website...you're tri-south, right?

Humana Military - TRICARE South Provider Locator

And, you just...pick one. I try to get a recommendation from my PCP, which is another reason I go in to get a referral.

A lot have specialties like "adolescent behavioral disorders" or "schizophrenia" but amongst something like "psychology". Can I still see those people?

Why can't their specialties be "depressed chick who eats too much"?

I just really don't want to have to go back to see my PCP if I can avoid it. She's very nice and I like her. I just feel weird making an appointment solely to get a referral.

Those are just the person's area of expertise. They can handle other cases. I might also look for a practice that has a bunch of people, that way if you and the counselor don't click, you can easily switch.

On Tricare you are eligible for 8 visits (I believe, but it may be 12?) without a referral. Just lock on the Tricare website and find a provider in your area. If they believe you will need more visits, they will put the referral in for you.

I want to see a psychologist (I'm a believer in talking through things) but the only ones are a husband and wife team. DH wants me to see a psychiatrist in case I need medicine. Hmph.

Mostly, i want a lady doctor.
